Depending on the function keys setting in the Keyboard tab of the Keyboard panel, you might need to add Fn to any shortcut involving one of the function keys. One of my favourites is ⌃F2 to move focus to the menubar. With the commands in that section, you can move the keyboard focus to various parts of the interface. Make sure that Keyboard is selected in the list on the left side. You can find the relevant settings in the Shortcuts tab of the Keyboard panel in System Preferences.
